Sensorimotor Art Therapy

It’s all about the texture, feel, and the comfort these textures can bring!

For those clients with high sensory needs, particularly Autistic clients, Art Therapy offers the opportunity to have these needs met through working with a variety of different materials and textures.

Having these sensory needs met during Art Therapy sessions soothes clients and helps with emotional self-regulation.

This filters into other areas of life. We have had parents say to us that their children have less meltdowns at home when they are participating in sensory activities during Art Therapy on a regular basis.

These activities include such things as making slime from scratch with a variety of different materials and textures and mixing with hands, making sensory and lava lamp bottles, drawing with scented crayons, finger painting, acrylic paint pouring, Play Doh, beads, rice, lentils, and kinetic sand just to name a few.

Playing with, feeling, and focusing on a squishy fidget toy can act as a distraction to breakthrough being stuck in a Meltdown. This is particularly helpful if things don’t turn out exactly as a perfectionistic Autistic child had pictured in their mind.

Making slime from a range of materials from scratch and then playing with it helps meet Autistic sensory needs which, in turn, helps soothe and self-regulate emotions.
